Ground-breaking ceremony for pioneering SEGRO Logistics Centre Hamburg Neu Wulmstorf
On Tuesday SEGRO celebrated the ground-breaking ceremony for the company’s and northern Germany’s first logistics building with an all-timber supporting structure
The new SEGRO Logistics Centre in Neu Wulmstorf near Hamburg will comprise around 22,000 square metres of logistics space which can be divided into two units and will be completed by early 2025. As a result of the timber structure, up to 14 percent of the CO² emissions required for construction can be saved compared to conventional construction methods.
In line with the company’s Responsible SEGRO commitment to Champion low-carbon growth, the logistics property has a range of other sustainability features. Future users will be able to use the green electricity generated by the PV systems on the roof directly themselves. The PV system will have a total capacity of 1.96 MW peak. A sustainable heat pump system will be used to heat the warehouse and office areas. Overall, SEGRO is aiming for the DGNB Platinum and DGNB Climate Positive sustainability certificates for the site. This means that the property will make a positive contribution to the fight against climate change. Furthermore, SEGRO aims to promote local biodiversity by installing beehives, insect hotels and nesting boxes for native birds.
Tobias Handtke, Mayor of Neu Wulmstorf, said:
‘I am delighted with SEGRO's progress. This architecturally and ecologically sustainable concept is providing an exciting economic boost on what was previously a brownfield site in Neu Wulmstorf.’’
Julian Kux, Director Development Logistics at SEGRO, said:
‘This pioneering development is a fantastic example of how we are continuously looking for ways to remove carbon from our development activities, both by building the structure from timber instead of steel and by investing in renewable energy to help the future occupiers reduce their operational emissions.
‘With the ground-breaking ceremony, we are perfectly on schedule to complete the construction work in the first quarter of 2025 as planned. We have decided to progress with this scheme speculatively as we are extremely confident that we will be met with great interest from potential users given the good location and our space concept.’
The SEGRO Logistics Centre Hamburg Neu Wulmstorf is easily accessible: The A1 motorway can be reached in just a few minutes via the B 73 trunk road. In addition, a connection to the A 26 motorway is to be opened up just a few kilometres away.
Construction work is carried out by the general contractor Köster.
